La noticia de que Stiliyan Petrov padecía leucemia fue recibida como un duro golpe hace un año, pero meses después, tras anunciar su retirada definitiva del fútbol profesional, las sensaciones son mucho mejores debido a que su tratamiento está funcionando y respondiendo positivamente. Hace unos días tuve la oportunidad de verle después del partido contra el Aston Villa y lo cierto es que me transmitió buenas sensaciones.

Desde que llegué al vestuario de los ‘Villanos’ mi relación con él fue muy estrecha, siempre se preocupó por mi adaptación en el equipo y me ayudó cuando todavía no hablaba demasiado bien el idioma. Quizá se sintió identificado conmigo por el hecho de que mi llegada fue similar a la suya y siempre he tratado de devolverle esa confianza con mi apoyo durante estos últimos meses.

No tengo ninguna duda de que va a ganar este partido, que es el más importante y volverá a vivir, en el futuro, una nueva etapa alrededor de los campos de fútbol. El mundo del balón es su pasión y la seguirá siendo a pesar de que está en una situación complicada y se echa de menos desde dentro la pasión con la que vivía el fútbol.

Echando un vistazo atrás, a todo lo conseguido, Petrov se puede retirar con la conciencia muy tranquila. Fue un gran jugador y se convirtió en el futbolista que más partidos vistió la camiseta de la Selección de Bulgaria por delante de Penev. Su carácter y actitud en el campo le llevó a conseguir numerosos éxitos y ahora, fuera del campo, será clave para una nueva vida con los éxitos más importantes que uno puede tener, la compañía de su familia y el ánimo de los suyos siendo, sin lugar a duda, todo un ejemplo y referente para mucha gente que desgradaciadamente padece esta enfermedad.

The news that Stiliyan Petrov had had leukemia was received like a harsh strike a year ago, but months later, after announcing his definitive goodbye to professional football, sensations are much better due to his treatment, that is working and answering positively. A couple of days ago I had the chance of seeing him after Aston Villa’s match and the truth is he transmitted good vibrations to me.

Since I arrived to the Villans my relationship with him was intimate, he always worried for my adaptation to the team and he helped me when I couldn’t speak the language. Maybe he identified himself with me as his entrance was very similar to mine and I have always tried to return that confidence back to him specially during these last months.

I have no doubt that he is going to win this match, perhaps the most important match of his life, and he will live again, in the future, a new era around football pitches. Football is his passion and it will keep on being it, in spite of going through a complicated situation, and we miss that passion for football from the inside.

Taking a look back, to everything we have achieved, Petrov can retire with a calm conscience. He was a great player and he became the footballer who played more matches with the Bulgarian T-shirt, even ahead of Penev. His attitude and character while in the pitch made him achieve numberless succeses and now, outside the game, it will be key for a new life among his family and friends. Without a doubt, he will be an example for plenty of people who unfortunately sustain this disease.
