Una derrota que debe cambiar a Inglaterra / A defeat that should change England

Inglaterra sale de este Mundial herida de muerte. Y no sólo por la humillante derrota ante Alemania, su archienemigo desde el ya lejano Mundial del 66. Los cuatro goles alemanes son cuatro puñaladas directas a un estilo que, por lo visto hoy, se ha quedado obsoleto. Alemania con su fútbol preciso y vertiginoso demostró su visión de futuro y dejó en evidencia a los de Capello, anclados en un paso futbolístico forjado a base de empuje y brega que tendrán que revisar si quieren salir adelante. Dudo mucho que para ello cuenten con Capello, aunque la catarsis que necesitan debe ir más allá del técnico de turno. Inglaterra está obligada a evolucionar y puede que esta dolorosísima eliminación sea el punto de partida.

Si el trabajo de Capello ha quedado en entredicho, la pobre aportación de dos de los estandartes del equipo también es digna de análisis. No hemos encontrado ni rastro del Rooney del United, ni del Terry del Chelsea. El delantero ha sido una copia mala del rutilante goleador de la Premier y el central uno de los responsable de la derrota ante Alemania. Sus errores en los dos primeros goles alemanes allanaron el camino hacia el desastre. Tampoco Lampard y Gerrard han estado a la altura, por más que ante Alemania cuajaran su mejor partido en el Mundial. La columna vertebral de Inglaterra se tambalea.

Dicho todo esto, conviene no pasar por alto el gol supuestamente fantasma de Lampard que el árbitro quitó a Inglaterra. Era el 2-2 y puede que la historia se hubiese escrito de otra manera. Nunca sabremos qué hubiera pasado… Lo que sí sé es que, pese al daño que te pueda ocasionar una decisión de este tipo, sigo siendo partidario de la imperfección. Una cámara en la portería habría concedido el gol claramente a Inglaterra, pero puede que matara lo que hace grande a este deporte. Pese a ello, el debate se volverá a abrir… y con mucha fuerza.

England leaves this World Cup death wounded, not only for the humiliating defeat against Germany, English archenemy since the World Cup ’66. The four goals are a stab for a tactic that looks old-fashioned. Germany with a precise football showed a looking-forward approach and showed Capello’s side up which is trapped in a slave-away that England should improve if they want to get over it. To do so is hard to believe they count on Capello, although that catharsis is far beyond the coach. England is obliged to progress and this defeat may be the starting point.

If all Capello’s work is being questioned, the poor contribution from two of the important players has to be analysed. We have not seen a Rooney like the ManU one neither Terry. The striker has been an awful version from the one in the Premier and the centre-back one of the responsible for the defeat against Germany. His (Terry) mistakes in the first two goals smoothed the way to the disaster. Neither Gerrard or Lampard played to their level, although against Germany both played their best performance. The English column is staggering.

Having said this, it is convenient not to forget Lampard’s disallowed goal that the referee didn’t want to see, it was the 2-2 and maybe things could have been different. We will never know what would have happened… What I know, despite the damage after that mistake, I prefer the imperfection. A camera on the post would have conceded the goal but could kill what makes the football so great. Despite everything, the debate would be open again… stronger than ever.
