Cumpleaños amargo para Capello/ Capello’s bitter birthday

Inglaterra sólo ha empatado en Sudáfrica y está obligada a ganar a Eslovenia para no queda fuera. Ver para creer. Hubo cambio de porteros. Me sorprendió lo de Capello, que ayer cumplía años. Si ahora falla James con Eslovenia… ¿lo quitará también? Quizá por el cambio en la portería, Inglaterra empezó mal. Pese a contar con la presencia de Barry a su espalda, ni Lampard ni Gerrard estaban finos. No eran capaces de tocar la pelota varias veces seguidas y abusaban del balón largo a Heskey y Rooney. No se asociaba nadie, no se tocaba en campo contrario. Los argelinos hacían su partido. Cinco atrás, juntitos, esperando ya que no querían ritmo.

Les faltó una referencia arriba. Sabiendo los problemas que hay en la portería inglesa colgaban balones al área. Los extremos presionaban a los defensas para que no la sacaran fácil y así hacían participar a James. El portero no transmitía seguridad, aunque no lo ví hacer nada mal. Arriba no llegaban. Un tiro de Lampard y nada más. Muy poco para un favorito. Controlaba el partido, pero sin crear ocasiones de gol… ni peligro. La apuesta de Capello por Wright-Phillips ya en la segunda mitad al menos cambió el ritmo. Encaró y forzó faltas por la banda, pero no era suficiente. Heskey falló por generoso una buena opción antes de que le quitaran por Defoe. Viendo que se acaba el tiempo. Comenzó a lanzar desde fuera con Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard, Defoe viendo que se acababa el partido.

Tampoco funcionó lo de sacar a Crouch y colgar balones. Se confirmó la sorpresa. Otra vez empate. Ahora tienen que ganar el tercer partido y sin Carragher. Debutará Upson, un central que ha hecho una buena temporada en West Ham. Pero que hace unos días ni estaba en Sudáfrica. ¡Qué cosas!

England only has drawn in South Africa so now they have to win against Slovenia to get through. Seeing is believing. There was a keeper’s change. Capello, who celebrated his birthday yestarday, surprised me. What if James fails against Slovenia… will he change him too? Maybe that change on goal is why England had a bad start. Although Barry played behind Lampard and Gerrard, the midfielders weren’t on. They could not play the ball between them so they opted for playing long balls to Rooney and Heskey. No one made a move to get an option; neither had they played the ball in Algeria’s pitch. The Algerians played their game, five at the back, close to each other waiting their opportunity.

There was no reference up front. Knowing all the problems in goal for England, they crossed balls into the area; the wingers were pressing the defenders so they had to play with the Keeper, who didn’t look confident, although he didn’t made a mistake. There were no chances just a long-distance shot from Lampard. That was it. Too poor for a candidate. They controlled the game, but had no chances to score… not even a dangerous one. At least when Wright-Phillips came in, in the second half, changed the pace. He faced the defenders forcing fouls on the wing, but it wasn’t enough. Heskey missed a chance, just before he got substituted, for being too generous. With no much time left Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard and Defoe took their chances trying long-distance shots.

The option of take Crouch on and cross the ball in the area didn’t work either. The unbelievable was confirmed. Another tied. Now they have to win the third game and without Carragher. Upson will debut, a centre-back that had a good season at West Ham even he wasn’t in South Africa a few days back. Unbelievable!
