"The main thing is the team and trying to stay up"

Carlos Cuellar's disappointment was clear after his return to first-team action ended in defeat at Spurs. Cuellar won a recall at White Hart Lane, making his first senior appearance since November having recovered from an injury.

However, the Spaniard couldn't help his side to a result in North London as the Black Cats took the lead only to suffer a 5-1 reverse: “We are really disappointed with the result, because we were on top [after taking the lead] and couldn't get anything positive from the game,” the defender told SAFSee.

Having battled back from an injury which disrupted a large portion of his season, Cuellar returned to action with the under-21 side recently and had been an unused substitute at senior level before winning a recall to the side.

He hopes to make a contribution over the remainder of the campaign but says the team comes first: “It's not been one of my best personal years,” he explained. “I didn't play in the beginning and was out for a long time, but I have been working hard to try and get an opportunity and keep playing. But the main thing is the team and trying to stay up.”

Meanwhile Cuellar reserved a special word for the travelling fans, who backed their side all the way at White Hart Lane and were still singing at the final whistle: “I haven't got the words, what I can say would not be enough because they have been great. They have travelled and supported us, it is a long way and many of them will have to work tomorrow. They were fantastic. You can feel it on the pitch. They are the best, they are fantastic for us”, the defender said.
