A late equaliser for Southampton cancelled out Emanuele Giaccherini’s first goal for Sunderland, as the Black Cats drew 1-1  at St Mary’s.

Emanuele Giaccherini fired Paolo Di Canio’s men into an early lead after just two minutes when he was unmarked in the box to head home a Seb Larsson’s corner. It is his first Premier League´s goal.

Southampton thought they had grabbed an immediate equaliser when Jay Rodriguez picked up a throughball from Lambert and slotted past Westwood, but the forward was ruled offside.

Pochettino brought on Osvaldo for the second half in an attempt to find an equaliser. Both sides created numerous chances. The home side equalising through the defender Jose Fonte headed in four minutes from time, sharing the points at St Mary’s. Carlos Cuéllar didn't play.

Almost 2,000 fans made the trip to Southampton which saw Sunderland earn their first point of the season.
