Darren Bent's seventh goal in 12 games rescued a point for Aston Villa after Kenwyne Jones had put Stoke City ahead (1-1).
The Potters made a bright start to the match and scored through Kenwyne Jones's header. But an out-of-sorts Villa levelled when the in-form Darren Bent expertly headed home Kyle Walker's cross just before the interval.
Aston Villa controlled the game for large periods and had the better of things after the interval but struggled to create clear chances. The visitors ended the game with 10 men after using their three subs when Fuller was stretchered off with injured.
Villa have now taken eight points from the last four games to virtually ensure another season in the Premier League.
Assistant Gary McAllister, temporarily in charge in Houllier's absence, said the result kept the club's current unbeaten run intact. Houllier is recovering from chest pains in hospital.
Cárlos Cuéllar was on the bench.
